The Best Homemade Snacks for Movie Night

When you have your own home theater system, you can enjoy a movie theater experience without having to leave the house. In addition to comfortable seats and a great film, some tasty snacks are also an essential part of the fun. These recipes are healthier than the popcorn you can buy at the movies but are just as tasty.

Nutty Caramel Corn

Sweet and crunchy caramel corn is a healthier take on the traditional buttery popcorn you purchase as a patron at the movies. To make this recipe, preheat your oven to 250 degrees. Prepare 16 cups of popped popcorn. In a saucepan, melt 1/2 cup unsalted butter. Whisk in 3/4 cup packed brown sugar, 1/2 cup light corn syrup, 2 tablespoons molasses, 1 teaspoon vanilla, 1/2 teaspoon baking soda and salt to taste. Pour over the popcorn. Toss in 2 cups of honey roasted or Spanish peanuts, raw almonds or another nut of your choice.

Movie Theater Nachos

This salty and savory snack is a favorite of many families. To make these nachos, arrange your favorite corn chips on a platter. Pour one cup of your favorite salsa across the chips. Combine one cup of refried beans with one cup of cooked ground beef. Heat and pour on top of the chips and salsa. Pour one cup of your favorite cheese sauce on top. Broil in the oven for two minutes. Top with jalapeno peppers, sour cream or shredded cheese.

Movie Night Trail Mix

In a gallon size food storage bag, combine one cup of pretzels, one cup of marshmallows, 1/2 cup raisins, 1/2 cup peanuts, 1/2 cup chocolate chips or candy coated chocolate candies and 1/2 cup dried unsweetened coconut flakes. Toss together and serve in a big bowl. These snacks make enough for the whole family to share and can be customized to your preferences or to accommodate any food allergies or sensitivities.
